A
youngster carrying too much weight has an
increased risk of several problems.
Obesity can lead to orthopedic problems,
diabetes, heart disease and other diseases of
the organs. There are growth and weight
charts available to print online for every
breed. Weigh your puppy often to record
his progress, and compare him to
breed-appropriate weight charts. You will
want to adjust his food intake to achieve an
average growth rate. You can weigh your
dog by weighing yourself first, and then again
holding your puppy, and then just subtract the
difference! You will want to easily feel
his ribs but not be able to see them, a dog in
healthy weight will have a slight
waistline.
There are several choices when it
comes to food type. Manufactured foods
come in three types: canned, semimoist and
dry (kibble). Canned food is the most
expensive to feed, but dogs find it the most
palatable.
