PLANNING FOR YOUR NEW DOG

Becoming  a dog owner is not something to be entered into lightly!  Owning a dog is a long term commitment, both emotionally and financially.  Before making sure this decision is the right one for you, you must make an honest assessment whether you and your home is the right fit for anydog.

You will need to make sure that the dog breed you choose suits your lifestyle.  Each breed has a distinct personality and characteristics that make it suited for particular settings.   First, determine the qualities you want in a dog by making a list of what traits are important to you.  Be sure to consider size, grooming needs, training needs, energy levels, and temperament.  Then research your chosen breeds to find the one that best fits your requirements.

Once you narrow your selection to a few breeds, meet the dogs in person.  You can expect each one to be an individual, so don't make your decision based on one example, like your neighbor's dog!  Attending dog shows is a great way to see different breeds up close and personal, and to meet breeders who are long-time experts in their chosen breed.

Where you purchase your dog or puppy should be one of your biggest concerns.  You have a better chance of being satisfied if you get your dog from a responsible breeder whose main concern is to produce dogs of good health and high quality, with stable temperaments.  And remember, puppies aren't for everyone!  You may find that an older dog is more suitable for your lifestyle.
